Indeed it looks brighter. You can simulate this with the 'image preview' button. I think you have to be in manual mode, AP, SP, etc. If you press this button, located at the front of the camera at the base of the lens, you can see a preview of your depth of field, you can also see how much darker the scene looks. When resting, the lens is normally at it's widest aperture, so when you look the the view finder this is what you normally see. the wider the aperture, the brighter the view. F1.4 is just astoundingly bright!
