Oil painting isn't really as scary as I thought it would be when I started doing it (although I'm still brand new). I think it's just a ton of practice after you've learned the techniques. A TON of practice.
So I'd suggest just using whatever paints you have and just doing it- you'll make mistakes, but that's part of learning how to paint.
And, nope, I haven't used the portfolio thing yet. I suppose I should look into that and see what it actually does... Hmmm... that's a good suggestion.
