Proposition 8 is an initiative that was on the California ballot in 2008. It was voted in, effectively overturning the California Supreme Court decision to allow gay marriage in the state of California. Opponents fought the law and lost. A similar law was passed in Maine the following year.

and also, on August 4th, it was finally overturned by a judge presiding over a lawsuit called Perry V. Scwarzeneggar in which the plaintiff argued the law violated their civil rights, which obviously the judge agreed with.
