it's real basis and many other deep-sea fish have a slimy, gelatinous skin. Of course I'm also just very bad at drawing scales 
There's actually a very simple trick to scales. You make crosshairs over the skin and that helps keep them all even when drawing them. Here's a tutorial [link]
