Yes, Christine tries to kill herself twice in the original rather than submit to Erik... it makes you wonder if all the C/E shippers have been reading the abridged translation :(

Though I did always wonder how exactly she had hoped to contrive to kill herself with scissors, however sharp - cut her wrists? Stab herself?

And why hadn't it occurred to her to use them on Erik instead? ;p
(To be fair, she probably wouldn't have had a chance to injure him in a physical struggle, whereas if he started coming into the bathroom while she was naked with the intent of forcing himself upon her, she might have managed to kill herself before he got close or -- more likely -- to deter him with the threat.)

In the original version Christine tries to kill herself by bashing her head against the wall! Erik finds her bloody and unconscious so he ties her to a chair mostly to keep her from hurting herself, mostly. Its one of the many instances in the novel where I found myself feeling bad for both of them. Absolutely no scissors were involved! Those are a very beautiful looking pair of scissors though.

The scene with the scissors is earlier :)

Actually I've a feeling that this may be one of the passages randomly omitted from the 1911 public domain translation -- in the original French (or newer translations), Christine takes a bath on the day after Erik kidnaps her and before she sees his face. And she takes a pair of sharp scissors into the bathroom for the express purpose of killing herself in case Erik should break in while she is naked and try to rape her :(

I'm sorry but there is no way from the original text! Erik would never have tried to rape her (though she fully expected him to do so). Erik had a very non-sexual, almost childlike view of love and marriage. The book was originally published in 1909.

I'm a bit confused here (and have just noticed that the original thread gives the full text anyway!)

Scissors absolutely are involved, Christine definitely does fear that Erik would try to rape her and plans to kill herself in that circumstance, and because the book was written at the turn of the century it uses the unambiguously accepted expressions of the time rather than calling it 'rape'. So... as far as I can see, we agree?

(Whether Erik actually would attempt to force himself upon her is pretty much irrelevant to her intentions of suicide if he does...)

Actually I think it would be best if we just agree to disagreeNod wink :P
