There is not very much contrast here actually. The painting girl is in the same depth of despair; she just tries to forget the pain with the help of her imagination, which sadly has no effect on the truth. As long as she doesn't completely get lost in her own world, her state of mind is still better than the other one's though. I am sorry if my analysis sounds like I am giving you a lesson on your own creation and is offensive. I would like to add that I love your art style. I'll check them when I have time. Also a little bit of a glimpse on your facebook page sparked my curiosity. You are interesting.
