Would you suggest any not so "poor" films? I am afraid hollywood has a bad habit of butchering any culture they can get their hands on.

hmm.. now this is hard question, as there surely is not many good historic films on hand. One pretty good "viking movie" is Stara Basn, it is polish movie, not 100% historical, but much better than any hollywood shit I think.

Then there is one russian "Alexandr Nevsky. Fight on Neva" movie from 2008. That movie is bit later than viking, its 13th century. Movie looks good. Costumes and props of that movie are well made, but that is all good in it. The story is just horrible russian patriotism. And as finn I dont found it really fascinating when it's fighting against swedish, and if you know history, the finland was part of sweden back then also. so it is against finns too...

From finland there is mini serie called "rauta aika" "age of iron" its bit weird filming of kalevala. The costumes are mainly all but real iron age, and as I said it is really weird movie at sometimes, but I think that it is still pretty cool serie. It has good atmosphere.

Icelandic Hrafninn Flygur was pretty good also. Its viking age. Costumes and stuff are not best ones, but the story is good. There is two more movies of the same serie, but I have not seen them.

No more "good" early medieval movies come to my mind. There really is not many of them.
