I think it's laid on a bit thick with the Ellie bits, but it's not bad at all. The whole car accident bit is a bit disheartening, I can't really imagine something like that occurring, but it's your fic, can't chew you out for making your own decisions. 
Good job, interesting read. Sorry if I seem so critical about this, I'm ultra picky about fanfics, it has to be just so for me to really enjoy it.

I'm entering this in a contest so I NEED critique! 
I was trying to think of a "humane" way for Russell's mom to die, I wasn't just going to have her drop dead in the spot. And, yeah, I wasn't sure about the Ellie bit....but Carl needed desperate guidance, and he wasn't about to ask his dog! Plus, in my Up: Space Emisary, there is ONE chapter where Carl breaks down and practically screams for Ellie to help him. 
I won't tell why or when, but it's the only time.
