They are not scales, they are similar to tentacular things, supposed to remind the player of things like octopi (i.e., cephalopods). Thus, I assume that asari really did evolve from actual AQUATIC hominids, wheras almost no one except for a tiny fringe group believes in the aquatic ape theory for human beings.
I wonder wether asari can move their head-tentacles if they want to. Perhaps many millions of years ago, those were longer? Did it used to be that they took in tiny water organisms through pores there, like whales with baleen, and then they ate them by sifting? Are there vestigial gills or vestigial venom glands or vestigial ink glands there? Do they have chromatopores, so when they are stressed or at the wrong temperature, they have streaks and blotches and change color? Do asari nurse with milk? It looks that way. She was born in 2077, which in the orient would be a fire-aspected year of the rooster.
