well, mostly just practice, but i had a lot of those how to draw books and fallowed those and plus copied a lot of books from artists i liked and a lot of photos from nature books, but still it just practice, practice, practice. if you what to get good at drawing, draw whenever you can and never stop. hopefully you get good by then.
Thanks for the advice. To tell you the truth I was never into art but then my life turned upside down when I came back from the U.S Navy. I needed something to control my emotions. When I saw a friend drawing something I knew that was what I needed. I know now that art will help me a lot. Do you know what I can start drawing? I'm only a beginner and I'm not a good drawer.

no problem. since you area beginner, i suggest starting simple things, draw simple objects you find around your house and put them next to a table lamp or some kind of light source so you get good sense of light and shadow and from their slowly start to draw stuff from nature photos.
Thanks. I think I can start with a table or some fruits. Would that let me stat to understand about shadow casting?
