Actually is it really based on western mythology.

Westerners tend to call excalibur their ultimate weapon, where people from asia tend to borrow a name from their own mythology like Masamune.

One game I've played (Golden Sun: The Lost Age) used both. Ironically, it was made in Japan (big surprise there) but Excalibur is the stronger of the two.

Still, point taken. I've seen Masamune and Muramasa used a lot, so I think I know what you're talking about.

That's probably because Excalibur is a singular weapon and Muramasa is the name of a sword-smith and the weapons he created, of which there are a multitude.
