Actually, halberds are closer to axes. This is, closer to a spear, or as Jessica has noted, a glaive.

Hmm...I've never heard this definition for a glaive before. I learned that it was a weapon similar to a spear, but with a blade that was typically fairly long and could be used to cut, and not just thrust.

Hmm...well, a word is simply a collection of symbols that mean something to us. Define it however you like. I was only stating the definition I know.
