XD Let me tell you the story of my rats. I waited the day I moved to my own home to buy one, because my mother had a phobia. The seller convinced me by talking about her own experience with her mother, who refused completely to let her have a rat until... her daughter bought one notwithstanding. Then, it appeared that the mother became, little by little, the rat's best friend.

With my own mom, it was even worse : she was very angry and scaried in the first time (she refused to have the rat's cage open in her house), but then, little by little, she begun to be curious, the fear disappeared, she came to care about the rat's health, ugged it, fed it and nowadays, she uses to wash the dishes with 4 rats on her shoulders XD.

On the other side, there are thousands of reasons I see not to have a rat. The more you take care properly of it, the more it's painful when it falls ill and slowly dies, because most of the rats are ill during the second half of their life, and feel guilty for that. You have to be strong if one day you decide to pet one.
