Just natural body-movements. Not many kids actually daintily fold their legs beneath them when squatting down to pick something up, unless they're wearing a skirt or something. Spread legs offer better balance, I find, enabling the person to stay in that position longer or stand up again with much effort.

He's 10, and at the start (generally) of puberty. So seeing girls he normally sees at school everyday, wearing regular clothing, now wandering around with body-hugging swimsuits is making him more than a little embarrassed, and uncomfortable in certain places ("nudge,nudge, wink, wink, say no more, guv'nor...")
