Modo is pretty fantastic. Rhino is also quite a good program, although I have never done too much Nurbs modeling.

I have used Lightwave for a long time, so I tend to stick with it because I am familiar with the ins and outs of the software. I find I can get a nice render very quickly, which is good since I usually take the result into Photoshop to add other things to it.

I like Modo a lot and I cant really compare it to LW since Ive never used LW, but LW has always gotten high marks from anyone Ive known to use it. I love Rhino but thats where I cut my teeth in 3d modeling so to speak. I will say that if you are use to working in polys you will be very frustrated working in nurbs. Its a much different work flow.

My process right now is to model in Rhino and bring the model into Modo for lighting and rendering. Since so much of what I model gets fabricated or Rapid prototyped its better for me to start with nurbs. Having said that I am learning Modo for purely illustration purposes.

Modo is a good modeling software - but it's also very good for rendering. So far, I have used it mainly for baking texture images. It's very good for making various image maps. I want to learn it more, but there is only so much time in the day :)!

I think in 3D a lot of it is what software you have learned to use. If you know how to achieve the result you want, that is the main thing :) It is like Painter or Photoshop. I use Photoshop because it's what I learned how to use. Then the focus is on making the art, rather than struggling with learning a different tool.
