There's a legend about St. Patrick that's kind of like that. One story about him and snakes goes that he was trying to convince a snake to go into a box, and finally said that he didn't believe the snake could fit in it. The snake climbs in, Patrick shuts it tight, and BAM! No snakes in Ireland.
Eastern European cultures always have the best legends and folk tales. Ever seen that anime "Twelve Months"? It's about a little girl with an evil mother and sister, and she goes out in the woods for a flower and meets the incarnation of the twelve months of the year, who help her get a flower that only blooms in a particular month. I loved it because one month, April, stands up for the girl and gets the other months to help her out...and April is the month of my birthday
But apparently it was based on an old Czech legend or something like that. I've been meaning to look for it on YouTube, it was pretty cool from what I remember.
Then of course there's the Russian Orthodox hagiographies that I still love to read, like Seraphim of Sarov, a Russian monk who was beaten near death by brigands but forgave them after they were caught. I also love the stories of "fools for Christ" - they were Russian saints who didn't want to fall into the temptation of pride, so they intentionally acted like idiots to keep people from praising them
I'd go to Russia to visit where all those guys lived, but...I don't speak any Russian, and I don't think I'd survive long there.
