But it's simply not Mario without his traditional cap.

Yes, that's kinda true. But my thought was that with the cap the hole in the ball wouldn't be visible anymore.

Yet it still doesn't give it the Mario feel and look.
If there must be a hole, move it elsewhere. The logo does not have to exactly look like Wikipedia's.
