I've never actually tried the high-pass method but I've read good things, maybe I'll give it a shot. I usually use either unsharp mask, smart sharpen, or the sharpen tool and do it by hand, depending on the image. I generally aim to take shots that don't need much, if any, sharpening, but sometimes it doesn't work out like you plan
