So wait. If someone goes to an artist and says "Draw this for me, but I'm not gonna pay you.", they should do it anyway? I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the music industry, but as far as business goes, no person does a service without compensation. Every person with a service to offer, including artists, have a right to charge a fee for that service. I don't recall the deviation saying that people shouldn't take smaller jobs so long as there is pay in it, but rather that it seems that those that aren't into visual art expect those who are to do things for them for no compensation at all. Last I checked, notoriety doesn't pay the bills or put food on the table. I personally have never heard of a band playing a gid without some form of pay, even if it is small time.
On a secondary note, some jobs that rely on visual art such as game illustration, design of most any kind, or working with advertisements frown on the small time underpaid jobs because it makes the designer/illustrator look like they aren't worth the money, and sometimes that's all people have is their art because they have no other skills. If their dream is to be a game illustrator, then why is it wrong and makes them less of an artist to want only top pay for their hard work and college earned skill?
Alphonse Mucha of the Art Nouveau era was primarily a commercial artist. His art is world renowned and inspires many artists even to this day, and he started with freelance art, as in, getting PAID for his work. He didn't do work for others for free, and eventually he moved up by moving from one major company to the other, painting posters for their ads. He was one of the greats in the art world, and he GOT PAID for his brilliant work even BEFORE he died. Most famous artists never got to see their art get somewhere like that. He did.
Weather it be for pride or pay, any artist has a right to compensation for their work without being called less of an artist, and without their art being anything less than art. Just because they make money from it doesn't mean they don't enjoy it any less or put any less effort or value into each piece.
