I havn't read the manga so I am just talking about the show and the game. No they are the same if count the fact that Ash was created from Red and that his outift come from Gold making him Gold.

Ash's DESIGN was based on Red, and the are only vaguely reminiscent of eachother. IE: Ash wears BLUE, Red wears, RED.
And Gold was created YEARS after Ash and Red.
