Look on his right hand from his perspective, you can see something wrapped around his finger.
I looked there, and that didn't quite look like string to me. And besides, if that were it, I'm sure we'd be able to see where the string goes down to connect to the table.
I'm pretty sure it's just a strap holding the string in place.

Not necessarily. It could just be a trick of the lighting, for all we know. It's just too hard to tell in this picture to be certain. And the table wouldn't really obstruct the view entirely. If a string was there, it looks like it would still just barely be visible from this perspective.

It's a string, indeed, a very thin transparent wire (used for fishing, as wana said). What you do see in this pic, is where I broadened it with scotch tape so it doesn't cut my already abused knuckles. Pretty sucky method but the timetables were my last minute prop and the shittiest thing I've ever done.
