That's true, thanks for the correction. Even if it's just hinted at, throughout the graphic novel rape is a means by which the Joker (and other villains) attempt to assert their masculinity/power. So, in the novel, there is always the threat of rape for women. For instance, during a rally the Mutant leader screams: “Only when they die by our hands and see their women raped will they know…we have the strength—we have the will—and now we have the guns” (2:73). He also threatens to “rape" Gotham (2:88). It's quite shocking how much sexual abuse comes up in the graphic novel. There is also very little female agency in the novel: Catwoman(dressed as Wonder Woman), and Carrie (even dressed as Robin) have very little action and are constantly being saved by Batman.
