This is interesting. You know those kits you get for children that are magic crystals? You add water and the crystals grow in different colours to make leaves, grass, and snow on the mountain top? That's what this reminds me of. 
I know exactly what you mean, and yes, this does remind me of that...even before I read your note! There's an eerie similarity to it. I used to make those crystals grow when I was a kid. Then they seemed to disappear for years, but made a re-emergence recently.
It's very cool. It's retro art!
