...Oh. Gosh. Uh. *skims story again* Well the first time I read it, I just imagined it was a guy. I suppose partly because you're male and it's first-person I assume the narrator was also male. The name "Les" (short for Lesley?) could be either male or female, I suppose. They mention a migraine, which women are supposedly more prone to. However, Alan says "Aye aye
sir", which insinuates male, unless he was just saying it like that because that's the phrase. And something about the speech makes me think pleasant/charming male businessman. Hm. Then again, I dunno.
But the comfortable way that the narrator and Alistair talk (and their first meeting) does sort of make me think male.
