You're thinking pretty clearly. However, I still like my placement. Remember, by the time the Gala rolls around in spring, Rainbow still wants to impress them (see her part of the musical number).
In addition, if I moved it, it would change the character dynamics. Part of this project was to de-clump the season as much as I could, while putting character introduction episodes toward the front of the season. This change would put three of season one's four biggest Rainbow Dash episodes pretty close together, in the middle of the season.
I also like the Rainbow Dash / Pinkie Pie / Fluttershy character arc that emerges in this manner:
Dragonshy - Rainbow makes things worse, but Fluttershy saves the day.
The Ticket Master - the tickets are for Fluttershy to attend with Twilight, for chasing away the dragon; Rainbow is the last to give up her ticket.
Swarm of the Century - Fluttershy makes things worse, Rainbow fails due to Pinkie, Pinkie annoys Rainbow but succeeds in ending the parasprite menace.
Sonic Rainboom - Rainbow works to improve Fluttershy's cheering, thinks Pinkie is ditzy enough to jump on clouds without protection from falling through.
Griffon The Brush-Off - Rainbow is no longer annoyed by Pinkie, Pinkie protects Fluttershy, and Rainbow declares her new friends to be her best friends.
