Do you have a preferred medium? Would you mind breaking down your technique for me a little? Do you do a wash before adding the general color? What is your process?

Hi, thanks for the comment. I prefer oils on masonite. Oils give me a longer working time to mix strokes on the surface, and the masonite is a very good smooth surface especially when working small. I've written a breakdown of my process on my blog: [link]

One last question, what is your general mixing for light / mid / dark skin tones, if you don't mind me asking. I realize this varies by the subject, but generally you must use a fairly consistent mix?

You're welcome.
It does vary from subject to subject. Lighting plays the biggest role in determining the colors, so the skin tones can really be anything. I may use more blues and greens in fair skin, and warmer colors in dark skin. If the light is cool, I used warm colors in the shadows. If the light is warm, I use cooler colors in the shadows. I try not to formulate the process too much.

I generally struggle with lighting / color usage to replicate that light.
