I've also always thought NM and Discord had something to do with one another. My idea was that NM came from a 'taint' of Discord upon Luna's mind, a stain he infected her with which spread faster and faster as she became jealous. That little stain would be the last little revenge he struck with just before his petrification, something that he knew would hurt the Sisters later.
That's an interesting take on it.
