Hotkey G for Gradient Tool

If you ever need any help with Illustrator, I'd be more than happy to help.

But do I have to put the gradient on an already selected shape or what?

Yeah, you select a shape and either select a pre-existing gradient from your Swatches panel or make a new one in your Gradient panel. You can drag swatches onto your Gradient panel to make new gradients and also drag those new gradients into your Swatches to keep them permanently. In your Gradients panel, you can also drag the triangles on the bar (you'll see what I mean when you look at it) to help change the percent of each color you want in the whole thing.

Uh........I think I tried all this.....

And it didn't work? That's definitely weird.

I might have been doing something wrong....

Have you had the opportunity to try again since? Because the only reason that could possibly not work is if you had the layer locked or you were trying to apply it to a symbol or you were inside of an opacity mask ._.

I'm quite sure it was unlocked and selected but it would only use the black and white gradient and I kept trying to drag colors down there...
