I like it but I don't see why it's a problem if one of them aces it and the other fails.

If they both fail, then Ally will have to put the beads in both of them. They'll both get ~12/35, for a total of 24/35, and 11 spanning the gap between them. I.e. as long as they both fail by more than 12, it doesn't matter how much more they fail by. But if Anne fails by less than 12, let's say, 3 questions wrong, then (12-3 = 9) an additional 9 beads will be available for Lisa - so the consequences of failure continue upto (12+9=) 21, after which things get no worse. And if Anne aces the test as she's implying she's able, she won't have any beads and they'll be no need to have 11 beads seperating them... so Lisa will face an extra bead for every wrong answer upto 35... ouch (yum).
