Thanks, Alec: it's a defensive feature of the old city wall of Norwich, designed to keep out the undesirables - Boudicca, Hereward the Wake etc ;)

Sorry about the late reply, Alec: about 10% survives - scattered like surreal punctuation around the city ringroad. Nice bit of stonework, mind... ;)

Even more of London's wall has vanished. It was used as a convenient quarry for centuries!
