I had similar issues were it would lock up on me when trying to play music and browse the web at the same time, could not fix it no matter what I did. So I swiched to 11.10 and uninstalled Unity and Compiz and installed Gnome-Shell and Mutter and is running great for me. Love the Gnome-Shell for sure.
