At first we just worked with pinhole cameras, then with Canon Rebel somethings (also film)... now we are into digital, but I am doing my final project with film because I love dodging and burning. It is a very interesting process, and teaches patience.

you might also want to look at Ansel Adams and the Zone system. It is a challenge to understand and work with... but worth the effort. It does not work well with roll film cameras because processing is the controlling factor, and you can't process only one exposure. But even so, and understanding of his work is a necessity for any photographer.
