When the moon is this thin, a special effect called "Earthshine" happens. While only a sliver of the moon is actually lit by the sun, the entire lunar surface is lit up by the reflection of the planet earth from the sun hitting it. It's hard to explain without some kind of diagram...
I think I can image what you're saying! I'll look it up anyways though o: That's really cool, I don't think I have ever seen anything like it!!
It's only when the moon is close to the sun so keep an eye out. You may need binoculars to see it as well but I can remind you next time
