the house has been here for about 20 years...and except for the small fenced garden all has been left "natural" with the local grasses being whacked down...we've only dug one small hole to put a tiny 2x3 foot pond in and boy the rocks that came out of that hole!! No way would we be able to put a real garden

I, too, love the sound of the cranes - we hear them and they're sooooo high you can barely find them!

Our house has been here since the mid 70's and since moving in we've let things go natural too...I have sand for a front yard! It's far less expensive than irrigating all the time but it's a lot messier than having grass. Most of our neighbors have done the same because the price of city water/sewer has gone up so high. We also had problems with sinkholes appearing and since the insurance has removed the coverage from the policy (but not lowered the rate)we're being more cautious.

we've got a well which has a really good flow so watering wouldn't be a problem, but I know if we tried to have a lawn the deer and jackrabbits and gophers sure would enjoy it

What causes your sinkholes? And how can an insurance company quit covering them? Or is it that they won't cover any injuries that result from them?

We dropped earthquake coverage when we moved up here (NO way would we have done that in southern CA!!) as quakes are very, very rare at this point in the state and because we're in a high fire danger area with no hydrant anywhere close the standard fire coverage is major expensive
