Even when there aren't any humans I like to use them as an excuse to play with themes and ideas that would otherwise seem strange and unnacceptable on humans.

Well, I always use anthros as I simply love writing about them. But yeah, you can make them do some pretty strange things that would really freak me out if they were human.

Especially topics involving morality, social norms, and sexuality... With humans it can lead to awkwardness if not set in an appropriate time period and make some people uncomfortable and writing it can feel ew.

Especially morality. Brian Jacques(don't know if he technically considered himself an anthro or furry) sometimes made his good characters absolutely merciless! In his novels there were giggantic bloodbaths in which thousands of enemies died, and a single hero slaughtered hundreds, locked in an insane bloodlust.
I like tooling with morality in my anthros best, and like to make them attempt to find the right and noble path...

I personally consider anthro and furry to be interchangable just to simplify things. XP
I personally like playing with social norms myself. In my story I have several different countries, some with norms and social structures that are messed up bu modern human standards. I think it's interesting to look at how an otherwise decent person can support, or at the very least not question something wrong.

Yeah, IK. To me this is awesome when I'm able to break out of normal social traditions and invent new, although sometimes disturbing, customs, traditions, and standards. But generally they're most interesting when they are considered disturbing because then, they create conflict between the main character(if he opposes the traditions...etc.) and his friends or the public.

And some things in an anthro world might just seem odd because they have different bodies. For instance, I think that members of an anthro society might be a little more open about their emotions since they would have ears and tails that can give much more obvious emotional cues than normal humans.

Exactly!!! I love the way you can do this with furries!!! I think that they are so cute when they lower both ears and just start crying like crazy!!!! It makes me cry so much!!!
