sorry to hear that.. FFVIII was and is, my all time fave of the series..
I hate FFIX though.. something about it made me think they ruined the franchise..

IX wasn't bad, it had characters I enjoyed, and a lot less emo than a lot of the rest of the series had been using up to that point. Honestly the only game so far that I've hated aside from VII is XIV... which I played in beta and was complete crap, the character models were nice but that was it, everything else was so painful about that game.
I liked most of the series because of it's themed message through it's storyline.. as well as how they manage to morph the plot so much that it's deep.. VIII did that in the best way.. which is why it's still one of my favourites, other than the character designs..
I never played XIV, but I didn't need to play it to know how bad it was..
