I totally agree.
The characters are deeply flawed but sympathetic, even the villains. And the atmosphere is dark, the symbolism is so rich and multifaceted, the story talks about good and evil, angels and demons without being pompous or overly epic and remaining well-grounded in reality, there's no wonder is one of the biggest goldmines in terms of inspiration for us fanartists and artists in general.
