More tomb kingish? Maybe, at least in a different way. Blanche's concepts also had a very decayed, sharp look about them, like on his vampire counts illustrations. Sometimes very technological-looking, sometimes more like skeletal monsters. It was a good compromise between every main influence the necrons have. But the miniatures look too gentle, even with rusty color schemes.
Maybe they tried to exploit the Tron hype and ended up making them look intentionally like plastic toys with pretty light effects.
I don't really care that much, at least they're easy to convert into something good-looking, but it pains me to see that half of their codex's illustrations could have been actually characterful, grimdark and inspiring. Now they just look like 2D renditions of the miniature range, it doesn't really bring anything interesting, even when they're well-done (and some, like Szeras, the deathmarks and the command barge, look really mediocre) and that's a waste.

Can't but agree!
Yeah, the older frontcover on page 28, before The Army of Aeons Past... basically much better then any other piece, aaand 10 years old? Same goes on page 30 with old piece of Necron Lord, then on the next page about Destroyer lord. Just look way to sleek and static, an uninspiring photo.
