I
am
dumbfounded.
Not to say this isnt good pixel art, but you used a base and got a DD

wow the prestigeousness of daily deviations has really dropped. I cant believe they featured based art.

Digital dolls, which use bases, have been receiving DDs since the category was created in 2007. It's really not much different than a collaborative work between two digital or traditional artists receiving a DD =)

Still pretty dumbfounded.
If you use a base, you're practically only doing half of the work. :y
Lyricanna's avatar
Not really. A lot of people make a ton of changes to the base they are using, which is a skill in and of itself. For example, [link] [link] and [link] all use the same base and look nothing alike.
gelajiou's avatar

Still, you're not doing all the work yourself.
Thats a bit insulting to me as an artist who does all of my own art from scratch.

Also, those arent all from the same base. Two are from the GLAM forums, but that doesnt mean it's used the same exact base.

Yes it is, the base is exclusive to members and is the only fullbody base it has. That's how much editing was done, which was the point I was trying to make.

A feature isn't just an award. It's a feature to show off anything. Personally, I think this base was used very well. The art doesn't always have to be of fantastic quality, just to portray something.

DDs help to get unknown artists seen.

My personal opinion of traced base art
is that its an insult to anyone who does art from scratch.

If a traced base WAS used, this is technically illegal.
Luna-Goodies's avatar
Okay, just, if people are offering bases for designs, it isn't illegal. And they never asked for the DD :) It was someone else.

And, They've added a lot to the design. :)

I just typed out a long speal about my opinions of using bases, but ill sum it up quickly here.
This artist obviously has talent enough to draw her own base for this artwork. The shading is really excellent, and it is really nice pixel art.

One thing I dont understand about wonderful pixel artists who use bases is
if you have the talent to do it yourself, why dont you? Why do you insist on building off of something someone else has provided (making it not entirely yours), instead of doing everything entirely yourself?
People who have the talent to do things themselves but opt to take the easy way out really screams 'lazy' to me.

Like I said before, im not trying to bash anyone nor the artist, as this isnt bad pixel art in the slightest, but its merely my opinion on using bases.
Its good to learn, but why continue if you have the apptitude to do everything yourself?

I agree with the last paragraph definitely. but it's the fact that you judged the fact that it was given a DD :P

This piece is given recognition before other pieces of the same quality, but done completely by hand, completely by oneself.
Lyricanna's avatar
A traced base wasn't used in this piece; it was a base from scratch [link]
gelajiou's avatar

Alright, I wasnt sure and I couldnt find it, which is why I didnt outright claim it to be a traced base.

My opinion on this matter still stands though. Though I'm not trying to put down the artist in any way, which is what I stated in my original comment on the piece, I was unaware of deviantart awarding DD's to art made with bases so I was completely in shock when I saw "base: [link]". I was in shock when I saw the 'traced base' category!

I'm not trying to bash the artist, but i am thoroughly disappointed that base artworks are getting recognition before some art done entirely by oneself that is thousands of times better than based pixel art.

Someone who is amazing at pixel art from scratch might not see a lick of recognition for their talents, but someone who uses a base here does really shocks me.
Artists who do things from scratch 100% put more time and effort into their artwork I believe, and I know this because I used to do pixel art with bases, and now I draw all my own things from scratch. If someone is so great at pixel art, what is the need for using a base?
Why use something someone else made to build your own piece off of when you are obviously talented enough to draw it yourself?
That really screams almost 'lazy' to me?

Oh well, opinions are opinions and people can't help but try to start arguments with me for sharing an opposing opinion.

If you see amazing 100% from scratch amazing Pixel Art, I would love to see them since I can feature from that category as well.

And it's probably best to agree to disagree at this point.

There was one deviant I saw a few months back with pixel art that was just fabulous, but I since lost their name u__u

also, agreed.
