Traditional western dragon mythology says that they can live for thousands of years so I'm sure Spike wouldn't be dead.  It's genius really, he ended the story with a melancholy cliffhanger, ensuring people would wonder what happened to Spike and the best of all: it's gut-wrenchingly beautiful.
