I grew up in Japan and was looking for others who may be interested in sharing common experiences of High School life, comparing things like shopping, Clothes, Strict Parents being held to very high standards because we were Americans. Especially in High School. Etc.

I've met quite a few interesting, and intellect women of all ages and from around the world. Check out some of the prose and poetry groups. Also when you see a piece of artwork you like comment. Not just 'nice piece' but what drew you the picture and why you like it on a personal level. You will be amazed where some of the conversations will take you.
As to your question many times the avatar is taken from their most recent or the favorite piece. I've seen woman use males as their avatars just as often to be honest.
