I'm still a loyal fan of the games, but I stopped watching the anime around that same time you did. I LOVED Indigo/Kanto, Orange Islands, and Johto, but by Hoenn, the quality seemed to plummet to the point where not even Team Rocket's antics could save it. By then, the 4Kids cast was the only redeeming factor, and when the US distributors replaced them, the anime was dead to me. I'll still watch once in a blue moon, just to see if it's getting any better. The answer; not really. The last episode I saw was okay, but Team Rocket never even made an appearance. (Seriously?! I know they're a shadow of their former selves, but, really?!)
Maybe I've just caught the wrong episodes, but it's like they're not even TRYING to draw in any periphery demographics! The new cast got better by the middle of Sinnoh, but it's still jarring to older fans.
