Welcome :D

Hmm... all I can suggest is, if you haven't already, looking at the manga/anime Zipang, which deals with the IJN in WW2. Not sure how accurate it is, but it's always an option. I never realized how hard it is to find accurate IJN uniforms until now  (then again, I rarely, if ever, draw things related to Japan)

Yes, Zipang, you're right. I've never seen it, but it is good idea to look it, I think.

You can easily find uniforms of IJN pilots and marines. But sailors had different types of it - winter, tropical, summer, common etc. This theme isn't described good in English literature.

I guess the Japanese didn't really want to hold on to WW2 and document it like almost everyone else did. Or maybe Western and Eastern front paraphernalia is more popular

But I'm sure there are ways to find out.

In truth Japanese solicitously save information about their history. They have many nice museums, like Aviation Museums in Kanoya, or Naval museum in Kure, were huge 1:10 model of Yamato stands. Japanese plastic models manufacturers produce almost all IJN (and Army) planes and ships, even auxillary. Also they have quite good historical books.

But you can see another situation with information about Japanese Armed Forces between the former Allies countries and USSR.

For example, in Russia the Pacific War considered as secondary conflict. It looks like wargame in comparison with bloodshed in the Eastern front. Even defeat of one-million Qwantung Army by Soviet troops almost forgotten by russians, because defeat of Germany is much more important for us. Today every russian housewife can tell 'Tiger' from 'Panther', but almost nobody interests in history of the Pacific war.

On the other hand, allies in their movies show only brave marines who shoot from machine guns into the jungles. They rarely show their enemies. The exception is kamikaze pilots or poor cannonmeat japanese infantry sometimes. Japanese ships in these movies usually destroyed by aerial attacks. So you can't see IJN sailors' uniform in movies nor in books. It just not interesting to (almost) anybody from the West.

So it will be wise to learn Japanese and read their books about IJN uniforms.

P.S. Wow, how large message. All written above is subjective opinion, not the only truth. ^_^'

Sounds like an educated opinion.
