what do you mean by clipping a layer?
if you use art program PaintToolSAI on the layer panels there should be a tick off/on box and beside are words saying "layer clip" you use it to colour over something
eg. you do ur base for the hair and u erased all the unwanted coloured areas. make a new layer and clip it , what it does is: it allows you to recolour the coloured areas where you did ur base colouring. most people use it when they begin to shade their drawing. This only applies to the layers underneath the clipped layer
