The aircraft I believe you may be refering to was most likely the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (other versions were the YF-11 or the A-12). A high altitude recon aircraft, it was capable of flying over 2,100 miles per hour equivilent to mach 3, cruising altitude approx. 95,000 ft. during most of it's operational life the sensative nature of the missions performed by this aircraft would more than likely have contributed to the strict security that claimed your father's camera and his audience with the base commander.
