I love this! I find more of a saddened perhaps distraught look on it's face than that of a "Derpy" one that you mentioned.
It has a feel of loneliness....abandonment, perhaps that of a loss? I find the emotion in this is Very high and can somehow relate to this.
Perhaps it's in the way the chin is drawn up or perhaps because of the eye's being covered....or maybe it's just in the pose.....etherway, there is a very strong emotional value here and I like it!
I was really confused upon first reading your comment, but I can see why you feel this way, now. I always believed it looked derpy because what you perceived as its nostrils were actually his eyes, in my mind. This, of course, made it look incredibly ridiculous to me.

....Hmmm, I see what you are saying now. Indeed looking at it in "That" light it does look a bit Derpy.
But I prefer the way I see it best. Indeed it would appear there are Two ways to interpret this work......Very nice!
