It took me a while to finally get to understand them a little. The best way to learn how they form is to use a reference, preferably a shirt of your own and manipulate it in the position you want. From there you have the option to copy it completely or only get the main features. After a while your eyes, mind and body will be able to instictively tell how the folds will look in future artworks with out the need of references.
