The order of your layers in very confusing, I've been trying to play around with the different layer modes, but to no avail :/ The overlay mode is very interesting but gets weird on me.

Oh actually I understood that part so I can help you~
First layer is the one with the overlay mode. Use it when the greyscale pic will be ready for colors.
The second one (under overlay one) is random greyscale pic. You can made it by yourself like salanchu did.
And the third layer is a BG. It helps with the overlay as overlay doesn't work on white or black space.

Hope it helps!

the 6th step and the 7th is the most confusing to me i can't tell if the overlay is supposed to be on the top of the other overlay, i also don't know where the multiplying and addition go or what they are for? i know the 7th is some sort of over painting but even so it looks great here but its confusing...

so accourding to you the sketch layer is the overlay layer and the multiplying layer is where you put the grayscale so im guessing its merged when the colors are added? the third layer is the background as the 4th step is adding colors to the background. then the fourth layer is another overlay layer which im assuming goes on the top on the background or the bottom? then the next layer is also an overlay layer which more color is applied. then that's when the whole tutorial becomes confusing because details are lost.   This is mine but its not turning out well at all i don't know how to execute this perfectly.

Oh wow, thanks! I think that's going to help a lot. Thanks again! :)

Oh, I forgot to mention the greyscale pic should be in 'multiply' mode so it will blend very well with the bg layer!
No problem. ^^ I'm glad I could help a little.
