Ah this old debate has got me again (be aware I might reply back to you, if you respond of course, with my current account rather than this one).
Anime is the Japanese word for cartoon. Yes, most animes are really different from cartoons, but so are the people in Japan when compared to people in America. I do use anime to differ Japanese cartoons from American, but I consider them both the same thing overall.
