You should O:< I tried it years ago like you and it didnt catch my interest either - but it's been my sisters favorite anime for years and she wanted to re-watch it so I figured why the hell not watch it with her. And then at some point I was like "oh my god why is this show so good" and then i got all the kimochis.
And since you're bored of shonen cause of SE - this one is actually a deconstruction and its more focused on strategies and the thought process rather than just fighting. And there isnt even any actual fights until like... episode 27. (and they're more interesting/better animated fights than the typical shonen fare)
if you do watch it though, dont watch the remake. Its too doinky.
